A thin layer of aluminum is vacuum-deposited on one side of the polyester film, and two such metallized films are wound with the metallized surfaces offset so that each extends to one edge of the winding. Zinc or zinc\/tin metallic spray is applied to each end to connect all the turns of the same electrode. The self-healing property is achieved because the metallization is extremely thin (approximately 20-50nm). When a localized dielectric breakdown occurs, the arc current vaporizes the thin metallization around the fault, creating a cleared zone that isolates the defect. The capacitor continues to function with only a negligible reduction in capacitance.
