The 25LC256-E/SN is a 256Kbit SPI Serial EEPROM from Microchip, organized as 32K x 8 bits with support for SPI modes 0 and 3 at up to 10MHz clock frequency. The extended temperature range (-40°C to +125°C) makes it suitable for automotive and harsh-environment applications. Block write protection allows protecting 1/4, 1/2, or the entire memory array, while the hardware WP pin prevents inadvertent writes. The 64-byte page buffer and self-timed write cycle simplify firmware design.

The 25LC256 communicates via a 4-wire SPI bus (CS, SCK, SI, SO). To write data, the host first sends a Write Enable (WREN) instruction, then a Page Program instruction with a 16-bit address and up to 64 bytes of data. The device internally programs the page within 5ms. For read operations, the host sends a Read instruction with the starting address, then clocks out data bytes sequentially. Write protection is controlled by the Status Register: the BP1 and BP0 bits select 1/4, 1/2, or full array protection, while the WP pin provides hardware protection of the Status Register itself.
