The Nexperia 74HC165D is an 8-bit parallel-in serial-out shift register in an SO16 package. The device features 8 parallel data inputs (D0-D7), a serial data input (DS) for cascading, and complementary serial outputs (Q7 and Q7′). The active LOW shift/load input (SH/LD) controls the operation mode: when LOW, parallel data is loaded into the register asynchronously; when HIGH, data is shifted serially on each rising edge of the clock (CLK). The active LOW clock inhibit input (CLK INH) can be used to gate the clock signal. The device operates from 2.0V to 6.0V with ±5.2 mA output drive and is specified from -40°C to +125°C. Multiple devices can be cascaded by connecting the Q7 output to the DS input of the next device.

The 74HC165D operates in two modes controlled by the SH/LD pin. In load mode (SH/LD = LOW), all 8 parallel inputs (D0-D7) are asynchronously loaded into the internal 8-bit shift register, regardless of the clock state. In shift mode (SH/LD = HIGH), the loaded data is shifted serially out through the Q7 output on each rising edge of the clock (CLK). The complementary output Q7′ provides the inverted serial data. The clock inhibit input (CLK INH) can freeze the shifting by being driven HIGH, effectively gating the clock. For cascading, the serial data input (DS) allows data from a previous stage to be shifted in, enabling 16-bit, 24-bit, or larger shift register chains. The internal register is a master-slave configuration that ensures reliable data shifting at frequencies up to 25 MHz.
