The 32.768 kHz frequency is the standard timebase for real-time clock applications, as 2^15 = 32768, allowing simple binary division to produce 1 Hz. The metal housing provides superior mechanical impact resistance compared to ceramic packages. With a frequency tolerance of +-20 ppm and load capacitance of 12.5 pF, the CS31 series is optimized for low-power oscillator circuits in timekeeping applications.

The CS31-32.768K-12.5 uses a quartz tuning-fork element that vibrates at its natural resonant frequency of 32.768 kHz. The tuning-fork geometry provides a low-frequency oscillation mode with minimal power consumption, making it ideal for battery-backed RTC circuits. The piezoelectric properties of quartz convert mechanical vibration into electrical signals and vice versa. When connected in a Pierce oscillator circuit with an inverting amplifier and load capacitors, the crystal provides frequency-determining feedback with very high Q factor, resulting in a stable and accurate oscillation frequency.
