The Microchip KSZ8081RNBIA is a highly integrated single-supply 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Ethernet physical-layer transceiver designed for transmission and reception of data over standard CAT-5 UTP cable. It reduces board cost and simplifies layout by integrating on-chip termination resistors for the differential pairs and a low-noise regulator to supply the 1.2V core. The RMII v1.2 interface provides direct connection to RMII-compliant MACs in Ethernet processors and switches. A 25MHz crystal generates all required clocks, including the 50MHz RMII reference clock output for the MAC. The KSZ8081RNBIA is ideal for industrial, consumer, and embedded networking applications requiring reliable 10/100 Ethernet connectivity.

The KSZ8081RNBIA operates as a physical-layer transceiver bridging the MAC layer and the physical Ethernet medium. 1) RMII Interface Subsystem: The Reduced Media Independent Interface connects to the MAC via a 2-bit wide data bus with a 50MHz reference clock, enabling compact designs with fewer signal lines than MII. 2) PHY Core Subsystem: The 100BASE-TX PCS/PMA performs 4B/5B encoding/decoding, MLT-3 scrambling/descrambling, and digital signal processing for transmit and receive data streams. 3) Analog Front-End Subsystem: Integrated termination resistors and line drivers/receivers interface directly with the magnetics and RJ-45 connector for the copper medium. 4) Management Subsystem: The MDC/MDIO serial management interface provides register-level access for configuration, status monitoring, and LinkMD cable diagnostics using TDR technology.
