The LM43601 is a synchronous step-down converter optimized for wide-input-range applications from 3.5V to 36V, with 42V transient capability for automotive load dump events. The device uses peak-current-mode control with integrated high-side and low-side MOSFETs to deliver up to 1A of continuous output current. With a quiescent current of only 33 µA, it is well-suited for always-on and battery-powered systems. The switching frequency is adjustable from 200 kHz to 2.2 MHz and defaults to 500 kHz, allowing optimization of efficiency versus solution size. The device is part of a pin-to-pin compatible family that includes 0.5A, 1A, 2A, and 3A variants.

The LM43601 employs peak-current-mode control with a fixed-frequency oscillator that sets the switching period. At the start of each cycle, the high-side NMOS switch is turned on, causing the inductor current to ramp up. When the sensed peak current reaches the error amplifier output level, the high-side switch turns off and the low-side synchronous rectifier turns on, allowing the inductor current to ramp down. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage with the internal reference and adjusts the peak current threshold to regulate the output. In DCM/PFM mode at light loads, the device skips switching pulses to maintain efficiency by reducing gate drive and switching losses. The precision enable pin doubles as a programmable UVLO threshold using an external voltage divider.
