The Pulse Electronics LSR32643/F914/A-PF is a magnetically shielded surface mount power inductor from the LSR series, designed for use as the energy storage element in DC-DC switching converters. The shielded construction uses a ferrite core with a magnetic shield that contains the magnetic flux within the inductor body, preventing EMI radiation to nearby components. The 3226 footprint (3.2 x 2.6mm) offers a good balance between current handling capability and board space. The wire-wound construction on a ferrite drum core provides low DC resistance for high efficiency and high saturation current for reliable operation under heavy load transients.

The LSR32643 power inductor stores energy in its magnetic field when current flows through the winding. In a buck converter, the inductor smooths the pulsed output of the switching transistor, converting the rectangular PWM waveform into a DC output with minimal ripple. During the switch-on period, current increases linearly (V = L × di/dt) and energy is stored in the ferrite core’s magnetic field. During the switch-off period, the inductor maintains current flow through the freewheeling diode, releasing stored energy to the load. The magnetic shield provides a low-reluctance return path for flux, preventing coupling to adjacent traces and components.
