The onsemi NCP1200D100R2G represents a major advance in ultra-compact switch-mode power supply design. Housed in an SOIC-8 package, this PWM current-mode controller allows implementation of a complete offline battery charger or standby SMPS with minimal external components. The device operates at a fixed 100 kHz switching frequency and drives low gate-charge switching devices such as IGBTs or MOSFETs. A key innovation is the self-supply feature — the IC is powered directly from the DC rail through the HV pin, eliminating the need for an auxiliary winding on the transformer. This ensures operation even under low output voltage or short-circuit conditions. When the output power demand diminishes, the controller automatically enters skip-cycle mode at low peak current, providing excellent light-load efficiency without acoustic noise. Internal leading-edge blanking (LEB) simplifies the current sensing circuit by eliminating the need for external RC filtering.

The NCP1200D100R2G implements current-mode PWM control. The feedback pin (FB) receives the error signal from an optocoupler, which sets the peak current setpoint. The current sense (CS) pin monitors the primary current through a sense resistor. An internal leading-edge blanking circuit suppresses the initial current spike at switch turn-on, eliminating false tripping. The PWM comparator compares the sensed current ramp with the error signal, terminating the switch on-time when the current reaches the setpoint. When the load decreases and the FB voltage falls below a threshold, the controller enters skip-cycle mode — gating off switching pulses until the output drops enough to require the next burst. This skip-cycle operation occurs at low peak current, avoiding transformer acoustic noise. The HV pin connects to the rectified DC bus through an internal startup current source that charges the VCC capacitor. Once VCC reaches the UVLO threshold, the controller starts switching and maintains VCC through the self-supply mechanism. Internal frequency jittering modulates the switching frequency slightly to spread EMI energy across a wider band.
