The SM8S17AHE3_A/I from Semtech is a 6000W peak pulse power bidirectional TVS diode in an automotive DO-218AB (SM8) package. With 17V standoff voltage and 26.2V clamping voltage at 228A, it protects 12V automotive bus lines against ISO 7637 load dump transients and ISO 10605 ESD events. The bidirectional configuration protects against both positive and negative transients. AEC-Q101 qualified for automotive grade reliability.

The SM8S17A uses a silicon avalanche diode structure with large junction area for high energy absorption. Below standoff voltage (17V), the TVS presents high impedance (1uA leakage). When a transient exceeds breakdown (19.1-21.1V), the device avalanches and clamps to 26.2V at peak current (228A). The bidirectional version has two avalanche junctions in anti-series, providing symmetrical clamping for both polarities. The 6000W rating is based on a 10/1000us exponential pulse.
