The SMBJ58A-13-F is a 600 W unidirectional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode from Diodes Incorporated in an SMB (DO-214AA) surface-mount package. Designed to protect sensitive electronic components from voltage transients caused by lightning, ESD, and electrical fast transients, it provides a 58 V standoff voltage with a minimum breakdown of 64.4 V and a maximum clamping voltage of 93.6 V at the rated peak pulse current of 6.4 A. The device meets IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection requirements and is rated for 600 W peak pulse power on a 10/1000 µs waveform. The SMB package offers a compact footprint with adequate thermal performance for through-hole or surface-mount assembly. The planar junction technology ensures low leakage current of 5 µA maximum at the standoff voltage and reliable operation over the -55°C to +150°C temperature range. Pb-Free and RoHS compliant.

The SMBJ58A-13-F operates as an avalanche breakdown diode designed to clamp transient voltage spikes. Under normal operating conditions, the TVS diode presents a very high impedance (leakage current below 5 µA) at voltages up to the 58 V standoff level. When a transient voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage (64.4 V minimum), the device undergoes controlled avalanche breakdown, creating a low-impedance path that diverts surge current away from the protected circuitry. The clamping action limits the voltage across the protected load to a maximum of 93.6 V at the rated 6.4 A peak pulse current. The energy from the transient is dissipated as heat in the silicon junction, and the device automatically returns to its high-impedance state once the transient subsides. The planar junction construction provides uniform electric field distribution, ensuring reliable and repeatable clamping performance over thousands of surge events.
