The TCA9538PWR from Texas Instruments is an 8-bit I/O expander that provides general-purpose remote I/O expansion for most microcontroller families via the I2C serial interface. It features 8 bidirectional I/O pins with per-pin direction control through a configuration register, a polarity inversion register, and an active-low interrupt output that alerts the host when any input changes state. The device operates from 1.65 V to 5.5 V, making it compatible with both low-voltage logic and standard 5-V systems. Two address pins allow up to two TCA9538 devices on the same I2C bus.

The TCA9538PWR communicates with the host microcontroller through a standard I2C interface at up to 400 kHz. The device contains eight registers: Input Port, Output Port, Polarity Inversion, Configuration, and additional control registers. Each of the 8 I/O pins can be individually configured as input or output via the Configuration register. When configured as input, the pin state is read through the Input Port register. When configured as output, the Output Port register sets the pin state. The Polarity Inversion register allows bitwise inversion of the input data. The interrupt output (INT) is asserted active-low whenever any input pin changes state from its previous read value.
