The TPS73701 is a 1A low-dropout linear regulator featuring an NMOS pass transistor in a voltage-follower configuration. This architecture provides several advantages over PMOS-based LDOs: excellent transient response due to the low output impedance of the source follower, no need for a low-ESR output capacitor for stability, and inherent reverse current blocking when the output voltage exceeds the input. The device achieves a typical dropout voltage of 122 mV at 1A with the new silicon revision, and the adjustable output voltage can be set from 1.20V to 5.5V using an external resistor divider. The shutdown mode reduces current consumption to below 20 nA, making it ideal for always-on battery-powered systems.

The TPS73701 uses an NMOS pass transistor in a common-drain (source-follower) configuration. The error amplifier drives the gate of the NMOS transistor to regulate the output voltage, comparing the feedback voltage with the internal 1.2V reference. Because the NMOS transistor acts as a voltage follower, the output impedance is inherently low (1/gm), providing excellent load transient response with minimal output capacitance. The reverse current protection circuit monitors the input-output differential voltage; when VOUT exceeds VIN, the NMOS gate is pulled low to prevent current backflow from the output to the input, protecting upstream circuitry. The enable (EN) pin controls the gate drive; when disabled, the gate is pulled to ground and the shutdown current drops below 20 nA. Foldback current limit reduces the short-circuit current to protect the device during fault conditions.
