The ADS8320 is a 16-bit, 100kSPS successive approximation ADC with a synchronous serial interface. It combines excellent DC accuracy (±2 LSB INL) with very low power consumption, making it an ideal choice for battery-powered and space-constrained data acquisition systems. The device operates from a single 2.7V to 5.25V supply and features auto-power-down between conversions, reducing average power consumption at lower sampling rates. The SPI-compatible interface supports daisy-chaining multiple ADCs on a single serial bus, enabling compact multi-channel designs.

The ADS8320 uses a capacitive DAC-based successive approximation register (SAR) architecture. When the CS signal goes low, the device samples the analog input and begins conversion. The SAR logic performs a binary search algorithm, testing each bit from MSB to LSB by comparing the DAC output with the held input voltage. The comparator determines whether each bit should be set or cleared, and the result is clocked out on the DOUT pin synchronous with the SCLK signal. After 16 clock cycles, the conversion is complete and the result is available. Between conversions, the device automatically powers down the internal circuitry, reducing quiescent current to less than 1μA, which makes average power consumption proportional to the sampling rate.
