The SMCJ64CA is a 1500W bidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diode from Littelfuse, designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment from voltage transients induced by lightning, inductive switching, and other transient events. With a reverse standoff voltage of 64V and a maximum clamping voltage of 103V, it is well-suited for 48V telecom systems, industrial power supplies, and VFD/IGBT inverter protection circuits. The bidirectional configuration enables protection for both polarities of transient voltage.

Under normal operation, the SMCJ64CA presents a very high impedance with leakage current below 1μA. When a transient voltage exceeds the breakdown threshold (71.3-78.8V), the avalanche junction rapidly turns on and clamps the voltage to a maximum of 103V at the rated peak pulse current of 14.6A. The bidirectional configuration uses two avalanche junctions in anti-series to provide symmetrical clamping for both positive and negative transients. After the transient event, the device automatically returns to its high-impedance standby state.
