The TPSC476K016R0350 from KYOCERA AVX is a 47 µF, 16VDC conductive polymer tantalum solid capacitor from the TPS C series. The polymer cathode technology provides ultra-low ESR of 350mΩ maximum, eliminating the ignition failure mode associated with traditional MnO2 tantalum capacitors. With 125°C operating capability and high ripple current rating, it is designed for demanding DC-DC converter output filter applications in a C-case (7343-31 metric) package.

The TPS C series replaces the traditional MnO2 cathode with a conductive polymer (PEDT/PProDOT) material. The polymer provides significantly lower ESR than MnO2, enabling higher ripple current handling and lower voltage drop. More importantly, the polymer cathode does not support sustained combustion during a short-circuit failure, eliminating the ignition failure mode. The self-healing mechanism occurs when a dielectric fault creates localized heating that oxidizes the polymer, increasing resistance and isolating the defect.
