The SMBJ400CA is a 600W bidirectional TVS diode from Littelfuse’s SMBJ series, providing high-voltage transient suppression for industrial and telecom power circuits. With a reverse standoff voltage of 400V and maximum clamping voltage of 648V, it is designed to protect high-voltage DC buses, motor drives, and power supply outputs from lightning-induced and switching transients. The bidirectional configuration makes it suitable for AC line protection as well.

Under normal operating conditions below 400V, the SMBJ400CA presents very high impedance with leakage current below 1μA. When a transient voltage exceeds the breakdown threshold (447-494V), the avalanche junction rapidly conducts and clamps the voltage to a maximum of 648V at the rated peak pulse current. The bidirectional configuration uses two avalanche junctions in anti-series, providing symmetrical clamping for both positive and negative transients. After the transient subsides, the device automatically returns to its blocking state.
