The 0034.8201 from Schurter is a surface-mount miniature fuse from the SMD-FST 5×20 series, designed for direct PCB soldering without requiring a fuseholder. The 5x20mm glass tube construction with time-lag (T) characteristic provides reliable overcurrent protection while tolerating transient inrush currents common in switch-mode power supplies and capacitive load applications. Gold-plated copper alloy terminals ensure excellent solderability and corrosion resistance, compatible with lead-free reflow soldering profiles. The fuse is rated at 250VAC with low breaking capacity (35A), meeting IEC 60127-2/3, UL 248-14, and CSA standards. With MSL 1 rating and -55°C to +125°C operating range, it is suitable for demanding industrial and consumer electronics applications.

1. Thermal Fuse Element: The fuse contains a specially designed fusible element within the glass tube. Under normal current, the element conducts freely with minimal voltage drop. The time-lag characteristic is achieved through a low-melting-point alloy or M-effect (Metallurgic effect) that delays melting during transient overloads.
2. Overcurrent Response: When current exceeds the rated value, the fusible element heats up. At 1.5x rated current, the fuse must not blow within 60 minutes (non-fusing). At 2.1x rated current, it must blow within 120 seconds. At 10x rated current, it blows within 20-300ms.
3. Arc Interruption: When the element melts, an arc forms across the gap. The glass tube contains the arc and the filling material (air/sand) helps extinguish it. The low breaking capacity (35A) limits use to circuits with limited fault current.
4. SMD Termination: Gold-plated copper alloy end caps are soldered directly to PCB pads. The gold plating prevents oxidation during storage and ensures reliable wetting during reflow soldering.
