The Power Integrations TNY255PN is an energy-efficient off-line switcher IC from the TinySwitch family that integrates a 700V power MOSFET and all necessary control circuitry in a compact DIP-8 package. Designed for low-power flyback converter applications up to 10W, the TNY255PN uses a simple ON/OFF control scheme instead of traditional PWM, eliminating loop compensation components and resulting in the lowest possible component count. The device is entirely self-powered from the drain pin voltage through an internal high-voltage switched current source, removing the requirement for a transformer bias winding. The 130kHz switching frequency allows the use of a smaller EE16 core transformer for the same output power.

The TNY255PN operates using a simple ON/OFF (bang-bang) control scheme. At each 130kHz switching cycle, the ENABLE (EN) pin is sampled. If EN is high, the internal 700V MOSFET turns on; if low, the cycle is skipped. An optocoupler feedback circuit pulls the EN pin low when the output exceeds the target voltage. This ON/OFF control provides fast transient response and eliminates compensation networks. The device is self-powered from the DRAIN pin through an internal high-voltage current source that charges the BYPASS (BP) pin capacitor to 5.8V. Auto-restart limits output power during faults by reducing switching duty cycle. Thermal shutdown disables switching when junction temperature exceeds the safe limit.
