The SM5420C-030-A-P-T from Littelfuse is a 30VDC bidirectional ceramic transient voltage suppressor (TVS) designed for automotive ESD and surge protection. AEC-Q200 qualified, it provides 1500W peak pulse power dissipation (8/20µs waveform) with fast response time under 1ns. The bidirectional clamping characteristic protects against both positive and negative transients. The 2220 chip package enables surface-mount assembly in automotive and industrial applications.

The SM5420C uses multilayer ceramic TVS (MLTV) technology with ZnO-based varistor material in a surface-mount chip format. Below the working voltage, the device presents very high impedance with minimal leakage current (less than 5µA). When a transient exceeds the breakdown voltage, the device impedance drops dramatically, clamping the voltage and diverting surge current. The bidirectional construction provides symmetric clamping for both polarity transients. The multilayer structure distributes energy throughout the device volume for high peak power capability.
