The IR21531STRPBF is an improved version of the popular IR2153 self-oscillating half-bridge gate driver from Infineon Technologies. This device incorporates a high-voltage half-bridge gate driver with a front-end oscillator similar to the industry-standard CMOS 555 timer, all in a single SOIC-8 package. Compared to previous generations, the IR21531 features better noise immunity through lower peak di/dt gate drivers and increased UVLO hysteresis. A shutdown feature on the CT pin allows both gate driver outputs to be disabled with a low-voltage control signal. The device maintains constant HO and LO pulse widths at startup for more stable frequency vs time profile. With micropower startup and 15.4V Zener clamp on VCC, the IR21531S is ideal for offline half-bridge applications including electronic ballasts and resonant converters.

Working Principle:IR21531STRPBF Working Principle

The IR21531STRPBF integrates an RT/CT programmable oscillator with a high-voltage half-bridge driver. The oscillator operates similarly to a 555 timer, with the timing capacitor (CT) charging between 1/3 and 2/3 of VCC through the timing resistor (RT). The oscillator alternately drives the high-side (HO) and low-side (LO) outputs with approximately 50% duty cycle. Internal dead time of approximately 0.6µs prevents shoot-through. The high-side driver uses bootstrap technique to operate at up to 600V offset voltage. The CT pin doubles as a shutdown input – pulling CT below 1/6 VCC disables both outputs. Micropower startup circuitry allows the device to be powered directly from the high-voltage bus through a startup resistor.
