The IR2156STRPBF is a complete ballast control IC from Infineon Technologies that combines a high-voltage half-bridge gate driver with a programmable oscillator and comprehensive state machine for fluorescent lamp ballast applications. This device provides programmable preheat frequency and time, internal ignition ramp, programmable run frequency, and programmable dead time – all in a single 14-pin SOIC package. Comprehensive protection features include overcurrent protection (CS pin), lamp strike failure detection, filament failure detection, DC bus undervoltage reset, and automatic restart. The IR2156 operates with micropower startup (150µA typical) and includes an internal 15.6V Zener clamp on VCC for offline operation. Latch immunity and ESD protection ensure reliable operation in harsh environments.

The IR2156STRPBF operates in several distinct modes to implement a complete fluorescent lamp ballast function. At startup, the IC enters Preheat Mode where it oscillates at the preheat frequency determined by RT and RPH resistors in parallel with CT. During this time, the CPH pin capacitor charges linearly, and when CPH reaches 13V, the IC transitions to Ignition Mode. In Ignition Mode, the frequency ramps down from preheat frequency to run frequency as the RPH resistor is gradually disconnected, generating the high voltage needed to strike the lamp. Once the lamp ignites, the IC enters Run Mode where the frequency is determined by RT and CT, and the lamp operates at steady-state. Overcurrent protection (1.3V threshold on CS pin) triggers Fault Mode, latching both outputs low until VCC is recycled or SD pin is toggled.
