The ISL95855HRTZ-T is a multi-phase pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller designed for Intel IMVP8 compliant microprocessor power supplies. Manufactured by Renesas Electronics (formerly Intersil), this device features Intersil’s patented R3™ (Robust Ripple Regulator) technology, which combines the best features of fixed-frequency PWM and hysteretic PWM while eliminating many of their shortcomings. The R3™ technology provides very fast transient response with reduced output capacitance requirements. The ISL95855 provides three independently controlled output voltages: VRA (core rail, configurable for 3, 2, or 1 phase), VRB (graphics rail, configurable for 2 or 1 phase), and VRC (system agent rail, 1 phase). All three rails communicate with the CPU via the Intel Serial Voltage Identification (SVID) bus. The device supports system input power monitoring (PSYS) and features 0.5% system accuracy over temperature. Current sensing can be implemented using either lossless inductor DCR sensing or precision resistor sensing for maximum flexibility. Differential remote voltage sensing ensures accurate voltage regulation at the load point. Comprehensive protection features include over-voltage protection (OVP), over-current protection (OCP), under-voltage protection (UVP), and thermal shutdown. The ISL95855HRTZ-T is supplied in a thermally enhanced 48-lead TQFN package with exposed pad for efficient heat dissipation.

The ISL95855HRTZ-T operates as a multi-phase buck regulator controller using R3™ technology for Intel IMVP8 CPU power delivery. Its core operation includes: 1) R3™ Modulation Technology: Unlike conventional PWM controllers, the R3™ (Robust Ripple Regulator) modulator synthesizes an AC ripple signal and compares it with an error amplifier output. This architecture combines the advantages of fixed-frequency PWM (constant switching frequency, good noise characteristics) with hysteretic PWM (fast transient response, no compensation network needed). 2) Multi-Phase Control: The VRA (core) rail supports 1-3 phases, VRB (graphics) supports 1-2 phases, and VRC (system agent) is a single phase. Phase shedding dynamically reduces active phases at light loads to improve efficiency. A current sharing loop ensures balanced current among phases. 3) SVID Interface: The Intel Serial Voltage Identification (SVID) interface allows the CPU to dynamically request different output voltages and operating states (including PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 power states). The controller responds to SVID commands by adjusting the output voltage and managing phase count. 4) Current Sensing and Monitoring: Both DCR (inductor DC resistance) and resistor current sensing methods are supported. The PSYS function monitors total system input power by summing the power of all active rails, enabling accurate system power budgeting and thermal management. 5) Protection System: Comprehensive protection includes over-voltage protection (OVP) with fast response, per-phase and total over-current protection (OCP), under-voltage protection (UVP), and thermal shutdown. These features protect both the regulator and the load from fault conditions.
