With an input voltage range spanning 4.5V to 42V, the LM22670 is extremely versatile, supporting everything from 5V logic supplies to 24V industrial bus and 36V telecom applications. The adjustable output version can be set to any voltage from 1.285V (the internal reference) up to approximately 37V, limited only by the duty cycle and input-output differential.

The device uses voltage-mode control with Type III internal compensation, eliminating the need for designers to calculate and optimize compensation networks. A dedicated RT/SYNC pin allows the switching frequency to be adjusted from 200kHz to 1MHz via a single resistor, or synchronized to an external clock for EMI management in noise-sensitive systems.

Packaged in a thermally-optimized PSOP-8 (SO PowerPAD-8), the LM22670 leverages an exposed die attach pad to conduct heat directly to the PCB copper plane. This enables reliable 3A operation in ambient temperatures up to 85°C with appropriate PCB design.

The LM22670 is a voltage-mode controlled buck converter operating as follows:

1. Control Architecture: The device employs voltage-mode PWM control. The error amplifier compares the feedback voltage (from an external resistor divider on the FB pin) against the internal 1.285V bandgap reference. The error output drives a PWM comparator that generates the switch timing signal.

2. Switching Cycle (On-Time): When the high-side N-MOSFET is turned on, current flows from VIN through the inductor to the output capacitor and load. The inductor current ramps up linearly at a rate of di/dt = (VIN – VOUT)/L, storing energy in the inductor magnetic field.

3. Switching Cycle (Off-Time): When the PWM cycle ends, the high-side MOSFET turns off. The inductor resists current change, so the current continues to flow, now circulating through the external freewheeling Schottky diode. The inductor current ramps down at di/dt = -VOUT/L while delivering energy to the output.

4. Output Filtering: The output capacitor filters the inductor current ripple, providing a smooth DC output voltage. The capacitor handles the AC ripple current while the inductor provides the DC load current.

5. Oscillator and Frequency Control: An internal oscillator sets the default 500kHz switching frequency. A resistor from the RT/SYNC pin to ground programs the frequency up to 1MHz, or an external clock can be applied to synchronize the regulator.

6. Protection Features: Cycle-by-cycle current limit, input undervoltage lockout (UVLO), thermal shutdown, and precision enable for controlled power sequencing.
