The LTC3780IG is a high-performance synchronous four-switch buck-boost controller from Analog Devices. This controller drives external N-channel MOSFETs to form a complete buck-boost power supply that can operate from input voltages above, below, or equal to the output voltage. This makes it suitable for applications where the input varies significantly, such as automotive systems with cold-crank and load-dump conditions, battery backup systems, and telecom 24V/48V infrastructure.

Using a single inductor four-switch topology, the LTC3780 provides seamless transitions between buck mode (VIN > VOUT), boost mode (VIN < VOUT), and buck-boost mode (VIN ≈ VOUT). The controller uses current-mode control with constant frequency operation, providing excellent line and load transient response as well as easy input filter design for EMI compliance. Synchronous rectification (all four switches are MOSFETs, no diodes) achieves very high efficiency — up to 98% — by eliminating the forward voltage drop of Schottky diodes. The switching frequency is programmable from 200kHz to 400kHz via a single resistor, and can be synchronized to an external clock for multi-phase operation or noise-sensitive applications. Key features include a power good output, output overvoltage protection, programmable soft-start, and thermal shutdown. The SSOP-28 package provides a compact solution with standard pin spacing for easy PCB layout. The LTC3780 is available in industrial (-40°C to +125°C) and commercial grades.

The LTC3780 is a four-switch buck-boost controller with current-mode control:

1. Four-Switch Topology: The controller drives four external N-channel MOSFETs arranged around a single inductor. Switches A (top-left) and D (bottom-left) form the input-side pair, while switches B (top-right) and C (bottom-right) form the output-side pair. The inductor is connected between the two switch nodes (SW1 and SW2).

2. Buck Mode Operation: When VIN > VOUT, the converter operates in buck mode. Switch A is always on, switch D is always off. Switches B and C alternate like a standard buck converter, stepping down the input voltage. The current through the inductor flows from left to right.

3. Boost Mode Operation: When VIN < VOUT, the converter operates in boost mode. Switch B is always on, switch C is always off. Switches A and D alternate like a standard boost converter, stepping up the input voltage. Inductor current still flows left to right. 4. Buck-Boost Mode Transition: When VIN is close to VOUT, the controller enters buck-boost mode where all four switches operate in a carefully timed sequence. This provides seamless transition through the VIN = VOUT point without output voltage glitches or excessive ripple. 5. Current-Mode Control: The LTC3780 uses peak current-mode control. The error amplifier sets a target peak inductor current. The current sense comparator terminates each switching cycle when the inductor current reaches this threshold. This provides inherent cycle-by-cycle current limiting and good line transient response. 6. Frequency and Synchronization: An internal oscillator sets the switching frequency, programmable from 200kHz to 400kHz with an external resistor. The PLLIN pin allows synchronization to an external clock, enabling multiple converters to operate at the same frequency (reducing beat frequencies) or to be phase-shifted for interleaved multi-phase operation. 7. Protection Features: Output overvoltage protection (OVP) clamps the output if it exceeds the regulation level by more than 10%. Current limit protects the MOSFETs and inductor from overcurrent. Thermal shutdown disables the controller at excessive junction temperatures. Soft-start gradually ramps the output voltage to limit inrush current.
