Utilizing Skyworks’ proprietary CMOS-based digital isolation technology instead of optoelectronic components, this device provides significantly better performance, reliability, and stability compared to traditional opto-drivers. The silicon isolation technology supports 5.0 kVRMS withstand voltage per UL1577 and 10kV surge protection per VDE 0884-10. Unlike opto-coupled drivers, the Si8261’s propagation delay is independent of input drive current, resulting in consistent 60ns maximum delay and much tighter part-to-part matching. With common mode transient immunity exceeding 50 kV/μs and 10x lower FIT rates than opto-drivers, the SI8261BCC is ideal for demanding applications including industrial motor drives, renewable energy inverters, and automotive systems. The SI8261BCC-C-IS uses Skyworks’ proprietary RF-based digital isolation technology to transmit control signals across the isolation barrier, rather than relying on an LED and photodiode as in opto-coupled drivers. On the input side, a diode emulator circuit mimics the behavior of an LED, accepting a forward current input (similar to driving an optocoupler LED) and converting it into a digital signal. This digital signal modulates a high-frequency RF carrier that is transmitted across the silicon dioxide isolation barrier to the secondary side. On the output side, the received RF signal is demodulated back into a digital control signal that drives the output stage. The output stage is a push-pull driver capable of sourcing and sinking up to 4A of peak current, with rail-to-rail output swing. The 12V UVLO (undervoltage lockout) circuit monitors the output side supply voltage and ensures the output stays in a safe state (low) when VDD is below the threshold, preventing insufficient gate drive voltage that could cause power switch damage. This all-silicon approach eliminates the LED aging effects and temperature-dependent characteristics that degrade opto-coupler performance over time, resulting in much higher reliability and more consistent performance.
