The 215 series from Littelfuse is a comprehensive family of 5×20 mm time-lag cartridge fuses designed to IEC 60127-2 Sheet 5 specifications. Available in current ratings from 0.125A to 25A at 250VAC, these fuses use a ceramic body construction for reliable arc suppression during fault conditions. The time-lag (T-type) characteristic allows the fuse to withstand temporary surge currents, such as motor starting inrush and capacitor charging, without nuisance blowing. With a high breaking capacity of 1500A and multiple international agency approvals (UL, CSA, VDE, BSI, CCC, CE), the 215 series is the go-to choice for primary and secondary overcurrent protection in commercial appliances, power supplies, and industrial equipment.

The 215 series fuse operates on the thermal-melting principle. Inside the ceramic body, a specially designed fuse element carries the normal operating current with minimal voltage drop and power dissipation. The time-lag characteristic is achieved through a multi-element design with reduced cross-section areas (weak points) and a solder blob that melts at a controlled temperature. Under moderate overload conditions (150%-275% of rated current), the solder melts and the weak points gradually elongate, providing a time delay before the element separates. Under severe short-circuit conditions (1000%+ of rated current), the weak points vaporize almost instantly, clearing the fault rapidly. The ceramic body contains the arc plasma during interruption, preventing fire and ensuring safe fault clearance at the 1500A breaking capacity rating.
