The 825U10PT2H from Littelfuse is a 10mm disc metal oxide varistor (MOV) designed for transient overvoltage suppression in industrial and AC line applications. With a nominal varistor voltage of 825V at 1mA DC, it provides bidirectional clamping for AC voltages up to 510V RMS and DC voltages up to 675V. The device can withstand peak surge currents of 2500A (8/20µs waveform) and dissipate up to 40J of transient energy. The ZnO-based semiconductor construction provides fast response and high energy absorption capability.

The 825U10PT2H operates as a voltage-dependent nonlinear resistor. At voltages below the varistor voltage, it presents very high impedance (essentially open circuit), drawing only microamp-level leakage current. When a transient voltage exceeds the varistor voltage, the device impedance drops dramatically, clamping the voltage across its terminals and diverting surge current away from protected circuitry. The energy is absorbed uniformly throughout the ZnO grain boundary structure. After the transient subsides, the varistor returns to its high-impedance state.
