The AL5809-100P1-7 from Diodes Incorporated is a 100mA linear constant-current LED driver in a 2-pin PowerDI123 package. With 2.5V to 60V input range, it drives LED strings of any length up to 60V total forward voltage. The preset 100mA output current requires no external components – simply place in series with the LED string. Internal thermal shutdown protects against overtemperature. The AEC-Q100 qualified AL5809Q variant is available for automotive applications.

The AL5809 uses an internal NPN Darlington pass element with a precision bandgap reference and current-setting resistor to regulate a constant 100mA through the LED string. The device maintains constant current as long as the input voltage exceeds the LED string forward voltage plus the dropout voltage (~1.2V). Excess voltage is dropped across the internal pass element and dissipated as heat. Thermal shutdown activates at approximately 160C junction temperature to prevent damage.
