The B59840C0120A070 from TDK/EPCOS is a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) thermistor designed for overcurrent protection and inrush current limiting. The device operates on the principle that its resistance increases sharply when the temperature exceeds a rated switching threshold (120°C). In normal operation, the PTC has low resistance, allowing current to pass freely. When an overcurrent condition causes self-heating (or an external overtemperature condition occurs), the PTC resistance increases dramatically, effectively limiting the current to a safe level. Once the fault condition is removed and the device cools, the resistance returns to its low value, automatically resetting the protection without manual intervention. The radial leaded disc package is suitable for through-hole PCB mounting.

The B59840C0120A070 operates through the PTC effect of barium titanate ceramic:

1. Normal Operation (Low Resistance): Below the Curie temperature, the barium titanate ceramic is in its ferroelectric phase with low resistivity. Current flows through the device with minimal voltage drop, allowing normal circuit operation.

2. Fault Condition (High Resistance): When overcurrent causes self-heating (I²R heating) or external temperature rises above the switching threshold (120°C), the ceramic undergoes a phase transition from ferroelectric to paraelectric state. The resistance increases by several orders of magnitude (typically 3-5 decades), limiting the current to a small holding current.

3. Self-Resetting: When the fault is removed and the device cools below the switching temperature, the resistance gradually returns to its original low value. This self-resetting characteristic eliminates the need for fuses or manual reset mechanisms.
