The CD4051B is an 8-channel analog multiplexer/demultiplexer from Texas Instruments, based on the classic CMOS 4000-series technology. It features three binary control inputs and one inhibit input for selecting one of eight channels. The device supports bidirectional signal flow from VDD to VEE, allowing it to switch analog signals including negative voltages when used with split supplies. With a wide operating voltage range of 3 V to 20 V and low on-resistance, the CD4051B is a versatile component for analog signal routing in data acquisition, test equipment, and industrial control systems.

The CD4051B uses CMOS transmission gates to implement an 8-channel analog switch matrix. Three binary address lines (A, B, C) select one of eight channels to connect to the common I/O pin. The inhibit input, when active high, disables all channels. Each transmission gate consists of parallel N-channel and P-channel MOSFETs that pass the full analog signal range from VDD to VEE with minimal distortion. The on-resistance varies with signal voltage and supply voltage, being lowest at higher supply voltages. The device can operate with single or dual supplies, enabling switching of signals that include negative voltages.
