The ESDA17P20-1F2 is a unidirectional single-line TVS diode from STMicroelectronics designed to protect power lines against electrical overstress (EOS) and electrostatic discharge (ESD) transients. The device clamps dangerous voltage spikes to a safe 23V maximum, protecting downstream circuitry. With a peak pulse power rating of 600W (8/20 µs waveform) and a stand-off voltage of 15V, it is suitable for 15V power rail protection. The ultra-compact SOD-882T package (1.0 x 0.6 x 0.35 mm) is ideal for applications where PCB space is at a premium, such as cellular handsets, wearables, and USB bus protection. The device features low leakage current of 80 nA at 25°C and operates over a wide -55°C to 150°C temperature range.

The ESDA17P20-1F2 operates through two key mechanisms:

1. Normal Operation: When the protected line voltage is below the stand-off voltage (VWM = 15V), the TVS diode operates in reverse-bias with minimal current flow (80 nA leakage at 25°C). In this state, the diode is effectively invisible to the circuit, presenting only a small junction capacitance (190 pF at 1 MHz).

2. Transient Clamping: When a positive voltage transient exceeds the breakdown voltage (VBR = 15.6V minimum), the TVS diode avalanches into conduction. The device absorbs the transient energy and clamps the line voltage to a maximum of 23V (VC) at the peak pulse current of 25A (8/20 µs). The 600W peak pulse power rating ensures the device can safely dissipate high-energy surges without damage. After the transient subsides, the diode returns to its high-impedance state, resuming normal circuit operation.
