The Panasonic ETCF680M6L is a 680 microF, 2.5V POSCAP (POlymer Sintered CAPacitor) from the TC series, utilizing a conductive polymer tantalum construction. The device achieves ultra-low ESR of 6 mOhm maximum — among the lowest in its class — and high ripple current of 4.4A. With 680 microF capacitance in a compact 7.3 x 4.3 x 2.8mm SMD package, it is ideal for high-current, low-voltage CPU/GPU VRM applications. The polymer tantalum technology provides stable ESR across the full -55C to 125C operating range. The 1000-hour lifetime at 125C ensures reliable operation in high-temperature automotive and industrial environments.

The ETCF680M6L uses a sintered tantalum pellet anode with tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) dielectric, formed electrochemically on the tantalum particle surfaces. A conductive polymer (PEDOT) is polymerized in-situ, filling the porous tantalum pellet and contacting the dielectric surface. The polymer replaces the traditional manganese dioxide (MnO2) used in standard tantalum capacitors, providing 10x lower resistivity and enabling the 6 mOhm ESR. The polymer also provides self-healing capability — if a dielectric defect causes a short, the high local current density oxidizes the polymer at that point, creating an insulating barrier that isolates the defect. The 2.5V rating requires approximately 3.5 nm of Ta2O5 dielectric. The 680 microF capacitance results from the enormous internal surface area of the sintered tantalum pellet.
