The IHLP1212BZER1R5M11 stores energy in its magnetic field when current flows through the wirewound coil around the powdered iron core. In a DC-DC buck converter, the inductor is charged during the switch-on period and discharged during the switch-off period, maintaining continuous current flow to the load. The powdered iron core provides distributed air gaps that prevent core saturation at high DC bias currents, resulting in a soft saturation characteristic.
