The Texas Instruments ISO1050DW is a galvanically isolated CAN transceiver that meets ISO11898-2 specifications. With 5000 VRMS isolation, 1 Mbps data rate, and a low loop delay of 150 ns, this device enables reliable CAN bus communication across galvanic isolation barriers in harsh industrial, medical, and transportation environments. The SiO2 isolation barrier provides excellent common-mode transient immunity (25 kV/us minimum), while bus fault protection from -27V to +40V ensures robustness against wiring faults. The I/O voltage range supports both 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers, and comprehensive safety certifications (UL 1577, VDE, CSA, TUV, CQC) facilitate system-level compliance.

The ISO1050DW combines a CAN transceiver with a silicon dioxide (SiO2) galvanic isolation barrier on a single chip. The logic side (VCC1, GND1) interfaces with the MCU through TXD and RXD pins at 3.3V or 5V logic levels. The transceiver side (VCC2, GND2) drives the CAN bus through CANH and CANL differentially. Data crossing the isolation barrier is transferred via on-chip transformers and capacitive coupling, providing 5000 VRMS of galvanic isolation while maintaining signal integrity at up to 1 Mbps. The isolation prevents ground loops, blocks common-mode noise, and protects the MCU from high-voltage transients on the bus. The driver includes a dominant timeout function that automatically releases the bus if TXD is stuck dominant, preventing network lockup.
