The KSZ8081RNBIA is a single-port 10/100Mbps Ethernet PHY transceiver from Microchip with RMII v1.2 and MII MAC-side interface support. It integrates on-chip termination resistors for the differential pairs and a low-noise 1.2V core regulator, enabling single 3.3V supply operation and reduced BOM cost. HP Auto-MDI/MDI-X automatically detects and corrects straight-through and crossover cable connections. LinkMD TDR-based cable diagnostics identify faulty copper cabling. The industrial-grade device in 32-pin QFN (5x5mm) supports EtherCAT fieldbus applications.

The KSZ8081 implements 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX physical layers. For 100BASE-TX, it performs 4B5B encoding/decoding, MLT-3 signaling, and digital adaptive equalization with echo cancellation. For 10BASE-T, Manchester encoding is used. The RMII interface transfers data to the MAC using 2-bit wide TXD/RXD buses at 50MHz reference clock. The 25MHz crystal input is multiplied internally to generate the 50MHz RMII clock output. Auto-negotiation determines the best speed and duplex with the link partner. HP Auto-MDIX detects and corrects MDI/MDI-X polarity, eliminating the need for specific cable types. LinkMD uses TDR to measure distance to cable faults.
