The LM22670 is a SIMPLE SWITCHER step-down voltage regulator with an integrated 250mΩ N-channel MOSFET, capable of delivering 1A from a wide 4.5V to 42V input. The adjustable version allows output voltage setting from 1.285V to 40V via an external resistor divider. Current-mode control architecture provides excellent line and load transient response with simplified compensation. The 500kHz switching frequency keeps external inductor and capacitor sizes small, and the exposed-pad HSOP package ensures efficient thermal performance. The device includes internal soft start, thermal shutdown, and current limit protection for robust operation in harsh environments.

The LM22670 uses a fixed-frequency current-mode PWM control architecture. The internal oscillator generates a 500kHz clock that sets the switching frequency. On each clock cycle, the integrated N-channel MOSFET turns on and current through the external inductor ramps up. The inductor current is sensed and compared to the error amplifier output; when the current reaches the threshold, the MOSFET turns off and the external Schottky diode conducts during the off-time. The error amplifier compares the FB pin voltage (from the output resistor divider) with the 1.285V internal reference and adjusts the current threshold to regulate the output voltage. The current-mode architecture inherently provides cycle-by-cycle current limiting and simplifies loop compensation compared to voltage-mode control.
