The LM2662MX/NOPB from Texas Instruments (formerly National Semiconductor) is a CMOS charge-pump voltage converter that inverts a positive voltage in the range of 1.5V to 5.5V to the corresponding negative voltage, or doubles the input voltage. Using only two low-cost external capacitors, the device provides up to 200mA of output current without the cost, size, and EMI associated with inductor-based converters. The typical output resistance is 3.5 Ohm, and conversion efficiency exceeds 86% at 200mA. The LM2662 features a Frequency Control (FC) pin that selects between 20kHz (FC open) and 150kHz (FC=V+) oscillator frequencies. The higher frequency allows smaller capacitors but increases supply current from 0.3mA to 1.3mA. The oscillator frequency can also be adjusted with an external capacitor on the OSC pin or driven by an external clock in inverter mode. The /NOPB suffix indicates lead-free packaging.

The LM2662MX/NOPB uses a switched-capacitor charge-pump architecture. (1) Inverter Mode: During phase 1, the flying capacitor C1 charges from VIN through internal switches. During phase 2, C1 is connected between ground and the output with reversed polarity, transferring charge to the output capacitor C2 and generating -VIN at the output. (2) Doubler Mode: During phase 1, C1 charges from VIN. During phase 2, C1 is connected in series with VIN, producing 2xVIN at the output. (3) Output Resistance: The effective output resistance Rout is determined by the on-resistance of the internal MOS switches (RSW), the oscillator frequency, and the ESR of C1 and C2. Rout = RSW + 2/(fosc x C1) + 4 x ESR(C1) + ESR(C2). (4) Frequency Selection: The FC pin selects between 20kHz and 150kHz. Higher frequency reduces the 2/(fosc x C1) term, allowing smaller capacitors for the same output resistance.
