The LM2901 is part of TI’s LMx39/LM2901 family of quad differential comparators designed for single-supply operation over a wide voltage range. It contains four independent comparators, each with an open-collector output that can be connected to voltages up to 36V regardless of the supply voltage, enabling level translation and wired-OR logic. The input common-mode voltage range includes ground, allowing ground-referenced signal comparison without additional bias circuitry. The LM2901M variant in SOIC-14 package offers robust performance for automotive and industrial environments.

Each comparator in the LM2901 consists of a differential input stage, gain stages, and an open-collector output transistor. The differential input stage compares the voltage at the non-inverting input (+) with the voltage at the inverting input (-). When the non-inverting input voltage exceeds the inverting input, the internal output transistor turns off, allowing the open-collector output to be pulled high by an external pull-up resistor. When the inverting input is higher, the output transistor turns on, pulling the output low. The open-collector configuration enables wired-OR connections where multiple comparator outputs can share a single pull-up resistor, generating a logic OR function. The output can also be pulled up to a voltage different from the supply, facilitating level translation.
