The device is specifically designed to maintain regulation with extremely low input-to-output voltage differentials, making it ideal for battery-powered applications. It features a very low quiescent bias current of 75 µA, significantly extending battery life. The LP2951 includes three additional features beyond basic regulation: an Error-bar output that signals an out-of-regulation condition (useful as a microprocessor power-on reset), a programmable output voltage capability from 1.25 V to 29 V via external resistors, and a logic-level shutdown input. Internal current and thermal limiting protection ensures safe operation under fault conditions.

The LP2951ACD-3.0R2G uses an internal PNP pass transistor as the regulating element, enabling low dropout voltage. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (via internal resistor divider for fixed versions) with a precision 1.235 V bandgap reference. The amplifier output controls the pass transistor to maintain regulation. The dropout voltage of 350 mV at 100 mA occurs when the input-to-output differential falls below the saturation voltage of the PNP transistor. The error comparator monitors the output voltage and asserts the Error flag (active low) when the output drops approximately 5% below the nominal value. The shutdown pin, when driven above 2.0 V, disables the regulator output, reducing supply current to near zero. Internal current limiting and thermal shutdown protect against overload and overheating conditions.
