The NXP PCA82C251T is a CAN transceiver designed for 24 V systems, serving as the interface between a CAN protocol controller and the physical bus. It is primarily intended for applications up to 1 MBaud in trucks and buses. The device provides differential transmit capability to the bus and differential receive capability to the CAN controller. It is fully compatible with the ISO 11898-24V standard. A current-limiting circuit protects the transmitter output stage against short-circuits to positive and negative battery voltage. If the junction temperature exceeds approximately 160°C, the limiting current of both transmitter outputs is decreased, reducing power dissipation. The CANH and CANL lines are protected against electrical transients common in automotive environments.

The PCA82C251T operates as a physical layer transceiver between the CAN controller (digital side) and the CAN bus (analog differential side). On the transmit path, the TXD input from the CAN controller drives the bus output stage, which generates differential signals on CANH and CANL. In dominant state, CANH goes HIGH and CANL goes LOW; in recessive state, both lines float. On the receive path, the differential comparator monitors CANH-CANL voltage and outputs the result on RXD. Pin 8 (Rs) provides three operating modes: High-speed (Rs to GND), Slope control (Rs via resistor to GND for RFI reduction), and Standby (Rs HIGH for low-current mode). Thermal protection reduces transmitter current when junction temperature exceeds ~160°C. A current-limiting circuit protects against short-circuits to ±36V.
