The PCA9548A is an 8-channel I2C/SMBus switch from Texas Instruments that allows a single I2C master to communicate with up to eight downstream I2C buses. Each channel can be individually selected or combined via a programmable control register. The device features an active-low RESET input for recovering from bus hang conditions, and supports voltage level translation allowing 1.8 V, 2.5 V, or 3.3 V devices to communicate with 5 V devices. Three hardware address pins enable up to eight PCA9548A devices on the same I2C bus.

The PCA9548A operates as an I2C-controlled multiplexer for I2C buses. After the master sends the device address (selectable via A0-A2 pins), an 8-bit control register is written to select which downstream channels are enabled. Each bit in the control register corresponds to one of the eight SCx/SDx channel pairs. When a channel is enabled, the SCL/SDA signals pass bidirectionally between the upstream master and the selected downstream bus. The pass-gate structure allows voltage level translation: the VCC pin limits the maximum voltage passed, while external pull-up resistors on each channel set the bus voltage level independently.
