The SHT31-DIS-B2.5KS is part of Sensirion’s SHT3x-DIS humidity sensor series, the successor to the widely adopted SHT2x series. It sets the industry standard in humidity sensing by combining multiple functions and various interfaces (I2C, analog voltage output) with a wide operating voltage range of 2.15 to 5.5V. The SHT3x series consists of the SHT30 (low-cost), SHT31 (standard), and SHT35 (high-end) variants. The SHT31-DIS-B2.5KS is the standard version with ±2% RH accuracy. Built on Sensirion’s CMOSens technology, the sensor integrates a capacitive humidity sensor, a bandgap temperature sensor, signal processing, and calibration data on a single chip. The DFN package measures just 2.5 x 2.5 x 0.9 mm, making it ideal for space-constrained applications.

The SHT31-DIS-B2.5KS operates through three key subsystems:

1. Sensing Elements: A capacitive humidity sensor and a bandgap temperature sensor are co-located on the CMOSens chip. The humidity sensor uses a polymer dielectric whose capacitance changes with moisture absorption. The temperature sensor utilizes a bandgap reference circuit for precise temperature measurement.

2. Signal Processing: An integrated ADC converts the analog signals from both sensing elements into 16-bit digital values. The sensor applies linearization and compensation for temperature and supply voltage effects internally, outputting fully calibrated data.

3. I2C Communication: The sensor communicates via a standard I2C interface at clock frequencies up to 1 MHz. Two I2C addresses (0x44 and 0x45) are selectable via the ADDR pin. Each measurement transaction includes an 8-bit CRC checksum (polynomial 0x31) for data integrity. The sensor supports single-shot and periodic measurement modes with configurable repeatability (low, medium, high).
