The SN65HVD82DR from Texas Instruments is a 3.3-V RS-485 transceiver designed for robust industrial communication networks. It meets IEC 61000-4-2 ESD standards with +-16 kV protection on bus pins, providing exceptional immunity in electrically harsh environments. The 1/8 unit load specification allows up to 256 nodes on a single bus without signal degradation. An extended common-mode range of -20 V to 25 V ensures reliable communication in the presence of ground potential differences. Open-circuit fail-safe receiver logic ensures the receiver output is high when the bus is idle.

The SN65HVD82DR operates as a half-duplex RS-485 transceiver with separate driver enable (DE) and receiver enable (RE) pins. The driver converts single-ended TTL/CMOS logic levels to differential RS-485 signals on the A and B bus pins. The receiver converts differential RS-485 signals back to single-ended logic. When both driver and receiver are disabled, the device enters a low-power standby mode. The fail-safe receiver design ensures the output remains high when the bus lines are open, shorted, or idle. The extended common-mode range is achieved through robust input stage design that can tolerate large ground shifts between nodes.
