The SN65LVDM176 is a high-speed differential line transceiver that combines one LVDM driver and one LVDM receiver in a single 8-pin VSSOP package for half-duplex communication. The LVDM (Low-Voltage Differential Multipoint) signaling standard is compatible with LVDS but provides twice the output current drive, enabling multipoint bus configurations where multiple transceivers share the same differential bus. The driver delivers a 350 mV typical differential output voltage into a 50 Ω load, and the receiver features 50 mV input sensitivity with open-circuit fail-safe. The device supports signaling rates up to 400 Mbps, making it suitable for high-speed backplane, cable, and point-to-point interconnects.
The SN65LVDM176 driver converts a single-ended LVTTL/LVCMOS input (D pin) into a differential current-mode output (Y/Z pins). The driver sources approximately 8 mA of current into a 100 Ω termination resistor between the Y and Z outputs, producing a 350 mV (8 mA × 50 Ω) differential voltage swing. This doubled current (compared to standard 3.5 mA LVDS) allows the signal to drive multipoint buses with multiple 100 Ω terminations. The receiver detects differential voltages as small as 50 mV on the A/B bus pins and converts them to a single-ended LVTTL/LVCMOS output on the R pin. An open-circuit fail-safe feature ensures the receiver output is high when the bus inputs are floating. The driver and receiver enable pins (DE and RE) control the direction for half-duplex operation — when DE is low and RE is high, both driver and receiver are disabled, and the bus pins present a high-impedance load to the shared bus.
