The SS36FA is a 3A 60V Schottky barrier rectifier in a compact SMA (DO-214AC) surface mount package. The low 0.55 V maximum forward voltage at 3 A reduces conduction losses compared to standard silicon rectifiers (typically 1.1 V), significantly improving power supply efficiency. The 60 V reverse voltage rating covers 12V and 24V system applications with adequate margin. The 80 A peak surge current rating provides robust transient withstand capability. A guard ring structure protects against voltage transients. The SMA package offers a good balance between power dissipation capability and PCB area efficiency.

The SS36FA uses a metal-semiconductor (Schottky) junction formed between a metal anode (typically molybdenum or chromium) and an N-type silicon epitaxial layer. Unlike a P-N junction diode where both electrons and holes participate in conduction, the Schottky junction is a majority-carrier device where only electrons flow from the semiconductor to the metal. This eliminates minority carrier storage during forward conduction, resulting in near-zero reverse recovery time and the low 0.55 V forward voltage drop. The guard ring structure around the active area is a P-type diffusion that acts as a voltage clamp during reverse bias, preventing edge breakdown and improving reliability. The reverse leakage current of 0.5 mA at rated voltage is higher than P-N junction diodes due to the lower barrier height of the metal-semiconductor junction, which is the inherent trade-off for the low forward voltage.
