The TLC5946 is a 16-channel constant current sink LED driver from Texas Instruments. Each channel is individually adjustable with 4096 pulse-width modulated (PWM) steps and 64 constant current sink steps for dot correction. The dot correction adjusts brightness variations between LEDs, ensuring uniform display appearance. Both grayscale and dot correction data are accessible via a serial interface. The maximum current for all 16 channels is set by a single external resistor. The device includes LED open detection (LOD) and a thermal error flag (TEF) for fault monitoring.

The TLC5946 operates as a shift-register-based LED driver with two data paths: grayscale (GS) data for PWM control and dot correction (DC) data for per-channel current adjustment. Serial data is clocked in through SIN at up to 30 MHz, and latched by the XLAT signal. The PWM controller uses the GSCLK signal to step through the 4096 grayscale levels. When the GS counter matches a channel’s GS data, that channel turns off. The dot correction data scales the constant current for each channel, compensating for LED brightness variations. The constant current value is set by an external resistor on the IREF pin. LOD monitors each output for open-circuit conditions, and TEF indicates over-temperature.
