The TLV5616 is a 12-bit voltage output digital-to-analog converter from Texas Instruments with a flexible 4-wire serial interface. The 4-wire interface allows glueless connection to TMS320, SPI, QSPI, and Microwire serial ports. The device is programmed with a 16-bit serial string containing 4 control and 12 data bits. The resistor string output voltage is buffered by a x2 gain rail-to-rail output buffer featuring a Class AB output stage. The settling time is programmable to optimize speed versus power dissipation. A high-impedance buffer is integrated on the REFIN terminal to reduce the need for a low source impedance drive.

The TLV5616 converts a 12-bit digital word to an analog voltage through a resistor-string DAC architecture. The 16-bit serial input word (4 control bits + 12 data bits) is clocked via the SPI-compatible interface. The output voltage equals 2 x REFIN x (code / 4096), where REFIN is the external reference voltage. The programmable settling time mode is selected by control bits within the serial string: fast mode (3 µs) uses more power for higher speed, while slow mode (9 µs) minimizes power consumption. The Class AB output buffer provides rail-to-rail output swing with good drive capability.
