The TPS55340 is a monolithic non-synchronous boost converter with an integrated 5A, 40mΩ N-channel MOSFET switch. It supports a wide input voltage range from 2.7V to 38V, making it suitable for a variety of power conversion applications including boost, SEPIC, and flyback topologies. The device operates at a fixed 500 kHz switching frequency that can be synchronized to an external clock, and features programmable soft start, cycle-by-cycle current limit, and thermal shutdown protection. The compact VQFN package minimizes board space while delivering high power density.

The TPS55340 uses a current-mode PWM control architecture. An internal error amplifier compares the feedback voltage (FB pin) with an internal 1.204V reference and drives the PWM comparator. The inductor current is sensed and compared against the error amplifier output on a cycle-by-cycle basis to regulate the output voltage. The integrated N-channel MOSFET switches at 500 kHz, and the external Schottky diode provides the rectification path during the off-time. In SEPIC or flyback configurations, the same control loop operates but the energy transfer occurs through a coupling capacitor or flyback transformer respectively. The soft-start function ramps the reference voltage gradually to limit inrush current at startup.
