The 88W8782-NAP2 is a member of Marvell’s Avastar family of highly integrated wireless LAN system-on-chip devices, designed to deliver robust WLAN connectivity with minimal external components and low power consumption. This single-chip solution integrates the complete WLAN functionality including the RF radio, baseband modem, media access controller (MAC), embedded processor, and host interface on a single die. Supporting IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n standards, the device operates in both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands with a 1×1 SISO (single-input single-output) configuration, achieving PHY data rates up to 150 Mbps using MCS7 modulation with 40MHz channel bandwidth. The integrated direct-conversion radio architecture eliminates the need for external SAW filters, while on-chip power amplifiers (PA), low noise amplifiers (LNA), and transmit/receive switches further reduce the bill of materials. The 2.4GHz path integrates a complete T/R switch, PA, and LNA, while the 5GHz path integrates PA and LNA. In the transmit path, the MAC assembles data frames and passes them to the baseband processor for modulation and coding according to the selected data rate and modulation scheme (BPSK through 64-QAM for OFDM, CCK for DSSS). The baseband signal is upconverted to the operating RF frequency, amplified by the on-chip power amplifier (PA), and routed to the antenna through the T/R switch. The transmit power control system provides both closed-loop and open-loop power adjustment with 0.5 dB steps. The integrated Feroceon CPU executes the WLAN firmware, managing association, authentication, key management, roaming, power management, and other protocol-level functions on-chip, reducing the processing burden on the host processor. The host interface (SDIO, G-SPI, or USB) provides the data path between the WLAN chip and the host system, supporting high-speed data transfer with DMA assistance. Power management features include various sleep modes and wake-on-wireless functionality to minimize power consumption during idle periods, which is particularly important for battery-operated devices. The coexistence interface enables coordination with other radios (such as Bluetooth) sharing the 2.4GHz band, optimizing performance through time-slot arbitration and packet scheduling.
