The Analog Devices ADM2587EBRWZ is a fully integrated signal and power isolated RS-485/RS-422 transceiver in a 20-lead wide-body SOIC package. It combines ADI’s iCoupler digital isolation technology with an integrated isoPower DC-to-DC converter, eliminating the need for any external isolated power supply. The device supports data rates up to 500kbps, operates from a single 3.3V or 5V supply, and provides 2500V rms isolation (UL 1577) with ±15kV ESD protection on RS-485 bus pins. Configurable as half-duplex or full-duplex, it supports up to 256 nodes on one bus with open/short fail-safe receiver inputs and >25kV/μs common-mode transient immunity.

The ADM2587E integrates three functional blocks: (1) iCoupler digital isolators using chip-scale transformer technology — high-speed data crosses the isolation barrier via magnetic coupling through polyimide insulation, providing galvanic isolation; (2) An RS-485 transceiver — the driver converts single-ended TXD to differential signals (A/B) compliant with TIA/EIA-485-A, while the receiver converts differential bus signals back to single-ended RXD; (3) isoPower DC-DC converter — uses high-frequency switching (approximately 180MHz) to transfer power across the isolation barrier via an integrated transformer, generating the isolated supply for the bus-side circuitry. The back-to-back architecture ensures signal integrity and power isolation in a single package. Thermal shutdown and current limiting protect against fault conditions.
